Connecting a router to modem is an essential step in setting up a home network. With the router to modem connection, you can enable multiple devices to access the internet through a single modem. While the process is relatively straightforward, there are some key things to keep in mind for a successful setup.

The first step is to make sure you have the right equipment. You'll need a cable modem provided by your Internet Service Provider (ISP) to connect to the internet, and a wireless router to create your Wi-Fi network. Many modem/router combos are available, but a separate router gives you more flexibility. Make sure your modem and router are compatible - check requirements like transmission speeds.

Before connecting anything, unplug your modem's power cord for at least 30 seconds to reset it. Once powered back on, connect the modem to the wall outlet and let all the lights turn solid. This may take 5-10 minutes as the modem connects to your ISP. Avoid connecting devices during this time.

With the modem online, use an Ethernet cable to connect from your modem's Ethernet/LAN port to the internet/WAN port on your router. Avoid using the Ethernet ports labeled 1-4 on the router for now. Connect the router's power cord - let it boot up fully until indicator lights are solid.

To confirm the router to modem connection, check that the router's WAN or internet light is on. Log in to the router admin page from your computer (default gateway address is often 192.168.1.1) and check the WAN IP address matches your modem's address. You can find the modem IP on a label or through your ISP account.

If the WAN IP addresses match, your router to modem connection is good! Now you can connect devices to the router's remaining Ethernet ports or via Wi-Fi, and access the internet. Ensure Wi-Fi is enabled on the router, then connect your computer or devices to the router's wireless network name (SSID).

Some tips for optimal performance: Position the router in a central area to maximize Wi-Fi range. Keep the router raised and away from obstructions. Use Ethernet for stationary devices like desktop PCs when possible. Set a strong Wi-Fi password and appropriate SSID name. Update router firmware periodically.

With a solid router to modem connection, you're ready to enjoy seamless internet access across multiple devices in your home. Extend coverage with mesh Wi-Fi systems or switches. Set up parental controls, guest networks, and other router features to customize your new home network. Enjoy streaming, gaming, work and more, now that your devices can share a fast and reliable internet connection through your modem and router.
