As broadband networks continue to evolve, service providers are deploying next-generation passive optical networking (PON) technologies like Gigabit PON (GPON) and 10 Gigabit PON (XG-PON) to meet the growing demand for high-speed connectivity. A key component of these networks is the optical network unit (ONU). In this article, we will examine the progression of GPON ONUs and XPON ONUs and how they enable the delivery of advanced triple play services.

GPON ONUs

GPON stands for Gigabit Passive Optical Network and represents a big leap over previous generation broadband networks. GPON uses point-to-multipoint fiber topology to deliver up to 2.5 Gbps of downstream bandwidth and 1.25 Gbps of upstream bandwidth to residences and businesses.

The ONU, or optical network unit, is the endpoint hardware located on the customer premises. It converts downstream optical signals from the provider into electrical signals that can connect to devices via Ethernet ports or Wi-Fi radios. The ONU also takes upstream electrical signals and converts them to optical signals to be transported back to the provider.

Early GPON ONUs supported basic connectivity and VoIP services. Models targeted at residential users typically had 1 Gigabit Ethernet port to connect to a gateway router, Wi-Fi radios, and one or two voice ports. Business-class units had additional Ethernet ports to support multiple devices.

As subscriber demands grew, GPON ONUs evolved to support advanced triple play services like IPTV, high definition video streaming, and online gaming. Key improvements included:

Higher port density with 4 or 8 Gigabit Ethernet ports

Integrated Wi-Fi radios supporting 802.11ac and 802.11ax Wi-Fi 6

Multicore processors to support router functionality and triple play IP services

USB ports to connect storage devices and printers

Battery backup for maintaining connectivity during power outages

XG-PON ONUs

While GPON networks can deliver impressive speeds, service providers are now deploying 10 Gigabit PON or XG-PON to meet rising bandwidth demands. XG-PON boosts downstream and upstream bandwidth to 10 Gbps and 2.5 Gbps respectively.

XG-PON ONUs represent the next evolution to support these advanced networks. Key features of XG-PON ONUs include:

10 Gigabit Ethernet ports to connect to high performance routers, computers and smart devices

High power Wi-Fi 6 or Wi-Fi 6E radios for whole home coverage

SFP+ ports for fiber connectivity

Multi-user MIMO for faster concurrent Wi-Fi connections

OFDMA for increased upstream capacity

Low latency for applications like online gaming and video conferencing

GPON ONUs with Wi-Fi 6

Recognizing that subscribers want the latest technology, some ONU manufacturers are now offering GPON ONUs with Wi-Fi 6 support. By integrating a Wi-Fi radio compliant with the latest 802.11ax standard, these units can achieve faster wireless network speeds, increased capacity and lower latency.

Key advantages of GPON ONUs with Wi-Fi 6 include:

802.11ax radios with up to 5.3 Gbps peak wireless throughput

OFDMA for supporting many devices concurrently

MU-MIMO for simultaneous transmissions to devices

Lower latency for time sensitive applications

Backward compatibility with 802.11ac and 802.11n devices

For customers wanting cutting edge functionality without upgrading to XG-PON, GPON ONUs with Wi-Fi 6 represent an excellent option. The faster wireless and advanced features can support emerging applications and devices without replacing OLT equipment.

In summary, ongoing improvements in GPON and XG-PON ONUs are enabling operators to deliver premium triple play services and multi-gigabit speeds. As networks continue to evolve, we can expect ONU capabilities to advance further driving the next generation of smart homes and businesses.
